This is an honest to God paper I wrote. I describe it as sheer brilliance.
I feel the best way to explain the Confessions of St. Augustine as I see it is best portrayed through the TV show, The Office. St. Augustine is like the character Michael Scott. Michael often finds himself doing things that are socially unacceptable, such as making lewd jokes to his staff, and knowing these things are wrong because people tell him often. This is almost a direct parallel to St. Augustine, who does things that he knows are wrong also. Michael and St. Augustine both do these things for the same reason; because they enjoy the feeling they get from doing them. Michael will bust a watermelon on a car; St. Augustine will steal a pear. Both are fruits, and relate back to the original sin of Adam and Eve of that said fruit.
One area where Michael and St. Augustine are again similar is the area of sex. Both have strong urges to go after the opposite sex. And they feel the need to proclaim their escapades to people. One can almost see Michael Scott on the same road of redemption as St. Augustine. In fact, Michael often has short-lived “revivals” such as driving into a lake. Every time he has one of these, a person can see him drawing closer and closer to an answer, but, again like St. Augustine, Michael rejects God. He almost makes the way to that answer but never goes that last step. I feel that Michael Scott of The Office is a great parallel to St. Augustine.
Holla!
